Don't park in that drain ... !

Just back from a weekend stay in Collioure in the Pyrénées Orientales for no other good reason than we wanted some kitchen decorations from one of our favourite shops - Majolique.

Collioure is so effortlessly beautiful, sat on the edge of the Mediterranean just a few kilometers from the Spanish border, that we really didn't need any other reason.

This visit was dry, but the last visit included some serious rain.  Now the Pyrénées Orientales are much drier than our usual stamping grounds in the Hautes Pyrénées, and many towns have large, dry drainage channels which only fill after rain.

As a consequence, these channels are used as a shortcut across town ...

... car parks ...

and the location for the Sunday market.

The only issue arises when it rains.  On our last visit, after overnight rain this channel was running with 12" of water and rising.  People who had parked in a dry 'roadway' were hurriedly retrieving their cars while they still could!
